Health Systems HNP Flagship Community of Practice

The Health Systems Flagship Program is a World Bank offering for policy dialogue and capacity building and aims to facilitate a strategic and systemic approach to planning health systems reforms that will move countries to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). This Community of Practice (CoP) is designed to engage "Flagship Core Course" and "Flagship Deep Dive" participants and alumni in ongoing policy dialogue with their peers and colleagues before, during and after the course.

Countries are entering a critical phase in achieving the health Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) at the core of these efforts. With only six years remaining to meet these goals, global progress toward UHC has been slow, and the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant setbacks.

At this pivotal juncture, we introduce two new reports that provide a comprehensive view of trends and prospects of government investments in health for almost the entire SDG period (2015-2029). The first examines government health spending trends in 63 low- and lower-middle-income countries from 2015 to 2023, while the second offers an outlook on government health expenditure for 170 countries through 2029. In contrast to expenditure figures, spending estimates exclude obligatory contributions to social health insurance, which, however, generally constitute only a minor source of public funding for health in low-income countries (LICs) and lower middle-income countries (LMICs).

The findings from these reports reveal troubling trends across LICs and LMICs, exposing serious risks to the sustainability of health investments. Fully attaining the SDG health targets is slipping out of reach for many nations, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action to address growing financing challenges. With these targets at risk, the World Bank Group remains committed to helping countries deliver quality, affordable health services to 1.5 billion people by 2030 as part of our global mission to ensure a basic standard of care throughout every stage of life.

New Report: Investment Framework for Nutrition 2024

Despite a 44% decline in child stunting from 1990 to 2022, progress is insufficient. The Investment Framework for Nutrition 2024 expands the focus to include low birthweight and obesity, adding policy considerations, operational guidance for country-level implementation, and gender and climate change perspectives. An additional $13 billion annually is needed to scale up nutrition interventions, especially in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. These investments need to be supported by targeted policies to influence consumer preferences. This report provides cost-effective, evidence-based investments and policy recommendations for countries.

Dominican Republic becomes the first country to sign for the "Alliance for Primary Health Care in the Americas", establishing a country-level advisory Committee.

The Alliance, supported by PAHO, IDB, and the World Bank, aims to strengthen the health system by investing in primary health care, favor coordination and coherence between current and future projects in the health sector, and provide strategic advice to the Ministry of Health. This initiative aligns with the National Strategic Health Plan 2030 and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, marking a significant step towards inclusive, people-centered health care. Between Poverty and Fragility: Affordable and Accessible Health Centers in Mali

The Accelerating Progress Toward Health Coverage Project (PACSU), funded by the World Bank, the GFF, and the Netherlands, has significantly improved access and quality of health services in Mali. The project has increased service quality from 37% to 81% and essential drug availability to 87%, with beneficiary satisfaction reaching 90%. Infrastructure improvements include 697 new buildings and 265 renovations, with 104 centers equipped with laboratories.
