The ongoing mpox outbreak, which has exposed serious weaknesses in areas such as surveillance, testing, diagnostics, and workforce capacity, particularly in Africa, is another reminder of the need and relevance of the Pandemic Fund. On September 19, the Pandemic Fund’s Board approved US$129 million in fast-tracked support to 10 countries in Africa affected by mpox, as part of its Second Call for Proposals and responding to the joint WHO-Africa CDC Mpox Continental Preparedness and Response Plan for Africa. The approved funding prioritizes countries experiencing active circulation of Clade I and facing acute emerging threats. Benefiting countries include DRC, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, and South Sudan. The Pandemic Fund Board has also agreed on the need to develop a mechanism for Special Financing to accelerate support to countries experiencing public health emergencies. Learn more.
