In the dynamic field of healthcare policy research, multidisciplinary approaches are increasingly used to improve project implementation and understanding of the impact of interventions. In this context, the inclusion of qualitative research methodologies in RBF programs have added significant value to the evaluation process.

Qualitative research offers a unique perspective in healthcare through social experiences and cultural meanings that help to explain, rather than describe, data. The information gathered through interviews, discussions, and surveys from people with intimate knowledge of the socio-cultural and political contexts has shown ways to increase the quality of care and service coverage in ongoing projects.

A recent results-based financing seminar, ‘Qualitative Research in RBF: The Promise and the Reality’, presented by leading experts Dr. Karina Kielmann and Dr. Fabian Cataldo, provided an overview on qualitative research carried out in 20 Health Results Innovation Trust Fund-financed projects between 2011 and 2015.

Resources from the seminar, including a qualitative research in RBF presentation and training manual for qualitative research methodology, provide support for thinking about ways in which the results of qualitative analysis can feed back into research, evaluation, and program implementation.
