Keeping Kids Cyber Safe. Got Tips?

We do! With school closures and subsequent transition to online learning, kids are spending even more time on the Internet. Keeping kids safe online is no small task for the parents who have been transitioning to remote work themselves while continuing to deliver on their work programs. That’s why we thought to offer a few resources for parents and kids to help keep children safe online.

  1. SANS Institute, an organization for security professionals, has recently released the “Securing Your Kids” webcast which provides a comprehensive overview of ways to secure kids online. It includes best practices, discusses recommendations for secure online learning, as well as provides some technology recommendations.
  2. NetSmartz, an online safety education program, is a great resource for both parents and kids. For parents, check out the Resources section for fun and well-designed presentations you can show to your kids. For the kids, visit the library of video lessons, read e-books and download fun printable activities on many relevant topics for elementary, middle and high schoolers.
  3. If your kids like Garfield (that naughty cat!), check out these videos from the Center for Cyber Safety and Education. You can watch the videos and then play games to reinforce the knowledge.
  4. The Google’s Be Internet Awesome site offers some good practices kids can use when using the Internet. For kids – and maybe adults! – play the Interland game to cross the Reality River testing your knowledge of true and false information on the Internet or visit the Kind Kingdom to share online kindness with fellow Internauts.
  5. The Better Internet for Kids resource center provides an online collection of videos on a variety of topics. You can select the language of the videos or review other resources offered by different European Safer Internet Centres.
  6. For parents wanting to inspire and educate their kids about cyber safety, try CyberStart game to play through as many cyber challenges as they can in 60 minutes! Kids can try their hand at forensics by examining digital media to identify and recover important information or learn about open source intelligence by helping cyber security agents track down some information on various members of a gang of hackers they are investigating! Enjoy!
  7. SANS, a leading U.S. cybersecurity training and research organization, launched CyberStart America, a free program for U.S. high school students to master cybersecurity as a gateway to the industry, up their digital skills, and compete for college scholarships. To be considered, students will play a game where they will solve realistic cybersecurity challenges while playing the role of a cyber protection agent. They will get to play CyberStart Game through the end of February, and students who complete at least 20% of the challenges will be eligible to enter a scholarship round where they can win $2,000,000 in scholarships to be used at the colleges they attend.
