On March 30, Professor Alice Evans, a well-known scholar of gender disparities, presented her provocative hypothesis to explain the stagnant female labor force participation in South Asia to an attentive World Bank audience. Comparing the growth experiences of  South and East Asia, the “honor-income tradeoff” argues that South Asian societies place a higher premium on female "honor", making the reservation wage to enter the labor force higher than in other developing countries. Read more.
