Out of the 231 indicators used to track progress in the Sustainable Development Goal agenda, 50 gender-related indicators cut across a wide range of goals. This paper looks at why countries are falling short in reporting on gender indicators. A major finding is that the lack of reporting not only reflects missing data, but also also suboptimal systems – underscoring the need to strengthen statistical systems and country-level advocacy to improve gender indicator coverage.
