With or Without Him? Experimental Evidence on Cash Grants and Gender-Sensitive Trainings in Tunisia (2023)

Better without him, according to this large-scale RCT conducted in Tunisia. The study assessed changes in women’s economic empowerment following the receipt of large cash grants and gender-sensitive trainings conducted with (and without) male partners. It found that involving husbands reduced women’s participation in income-generating activities as well as their income and hours worked. This report is a stimulating addition to the literature on non-unitary household behavior models, which recognize differing preferences among family members, including spouses who strategize to control resources and conceal income.  Read more >>
