This paper provides surprising evidence on gender gaps in urban housing ownership. About 1,300 households in a low-income area of Dhaka were randomly selected, with male and female respondents (who were most knowledgeable about household matters) interviewed separately by interviewers of the same sex. Interviewees were asked to distinguish between reported owners, economic owners, and documented owners or holders of various rights, including the right to sell, bequeath, rent, and use the property as collateral. The data reveal nearly equal rates of reported ownership among these urban households – 9.7% for males and 9.2% for females.
