To better understand the gaps and barriers impacting women in the South Asian energy sector, the World Bank conducted a regional baseline assessment. The study collected data from over 100 energy sector organizations and academic institutions and interviewed almost 500 women and men. The data confirm very low female representation in the power sector, with representation in utilities is low for women in all roles (3%-25%) and even lower for women in technical roles (0.1%-21%). Low female enrollment in engineering education (0.5%-31%) contributes to the small pool of qualified job candidates. The assessment participants identified the lack of role models/networking support, limited fieldwork/training opportunities, and inadequate facilities (i.e., separate toilets/safe transportation/ daycare/flex-leave) as the major barriers to women’s careers in the power sector.
