The Effects of Childcare: Evidence from a Randomized Evaluation in Burkina Faso

This paper from the Africa Region Gender Innovation Lab tests the impact of community-based childcare facilities on the welfare of women and children. The randomized evaluation of childcare centers, which were embedded in a public works program in Burkina Faso shows improvements in employment and financial outcomes for women as well as in child development scores. However, the researchers found no increase in the decision-making autonomy or changes in intrahousehold division of childcare – suggesting the need for complementary efforts to change intrahousehold dynamics and social norms. Read more.
