This blog delves into the complex dynamics of gender, religion, and the politics of the marginalized in India. In Bihar, one of India’s most populous and poorest states, researchers conducted a survey experiment in areas with incidents of communal violence, asking the respondents to choose their preferred profile for a state legislative assembly candidate. This research uncovered that women favor female political candidates, especially those who promise security. However, partisan loyalties outweigh gender preferences, indicating the need for parties to nominate female candidates to address gender disparities in political representation.
