Presenting a qualitative analysis of the experiences of women earthquake survivors during and after the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, this paper focuses on how socioeconomic factors, such as citizenship, caste, ethnicity, income, debt, and location, shaped their evacuation, relief, and recovery. It finds that women’s knowledge and actions were crucial in rescuing and protecting families. Yet, legal obstacles, especially the lack of citizenship rights, hindered recovery and led to women having to take on new debt. The earthquake’s aftermath also shifted patriarchal norms, allowing some women to take on new roles and challenge cultural gender taboos.
