This blog examines the internal migration of adolescent girls in Ethiopia, focusing on those working as domestic or sex workers in Addis Ababa. The girls migrated to escape oppressive gender norms, abusive family situations, and arranged marriages. Their search for better lives, however, frequently led to exploitation and abuse. Domestic workers were particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment and exploitation, while sex workers encountered violence and stigma. Despite these challenges, migration provided some with a sense of freedom, independence, and maturity, and networking and mutual support were crucial for minimizing vulnerabilities.
