This study presents a theoretical framework and empirical evidence on the role of transportation infrastructure in shaping women's labor force participation in 12 Indian cities. It finds that while both public and private transport increase labor force participation overall, improvements in public transport boost women’s labor force participation more than that of men’s – an effect that is more pronounced in communities with lower levels of sexual harassment.
