Bio:
Abraham Alex Otoo is an Assistant Director at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and currently the Head of Aged Policy Desk. Alex is a career civil servant and a graduate of the University of Ghana Legon with B.A Hons. In Psychology and Information Studies. After completing the University of Ghana Legon in May 2007, the desire to do voluntary service for my country appealed to me so much that I made up my mind to work with the Ghana youth Employment Program for a year where I worked at the University of Ghana Clinic as assisting counselor for HIV AIDS patients. I then went to the Ghana school of Marketing to undertake Chartered Institute of Marketing UK (CIM-UK) studies in marketing for a year. I worked with SIGMA Base Oil & Gas Training Institute as marketing officer after my studies at Ghana School of marketing. In 2011 I took up the challenge to work at Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs now Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection as an Assistant Director (Administrative Class). My first challenge was to serve as a member of the planning committee for Ghana’s participation at the Commission for the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. I performed other add on roles like protocol officer and estate officer, all I accepted willingly without any extra allowance but my interest was to learn as much as I could. It didn’t come to me as a surprise when I was appointed to head the newly created Ageing Policy Desk in Dec 2013. I must admit that the position has been very challenging but fulfilling. Accepting challenges has however been the with humility, problem solver, spontaneous and communicative. I believe that these qualities are very necessary in being an administrator (policy maker) first of all and heading a policy desk on ageing as well. some of my accomplishments on the desk are Constitution of the advisory committee on ageing Overseeing the drafting and preparation of the drafting instructions for an ageing Bill Implementation of the ‘Eban’ elderly welfare card project Institution of the end of year party for the elderly Ghana’s delegate to the UN Commission of Social Development in New York.
