A controversial crisis generating a disaster. For some time now the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center has been warning that weather patterns over Sri Lanka were changing and that precipitation patterns were shifting away from catchment areas. The government failed to take this seriously which is natural since most people in government have hardly any understanding of climate change and its possible impact on weather patterns.
Now that drought has set in the government as well as NGOs are rushing around in search of short term solutions while hardly any effort is being put into long term response. My requests that long term rainfall, temperature and population data be made available for analysis so that water management systems can be redesigned to trap precipitate and manage its utilization both for agriculture as well as for consumption has so far not been responded to.
