    Aravind Eye Care System, Madurai, Tamil Nadu: A Case Study with Details for Replication The Aravind Eye Care System (AECS) is a pioneering research institution, established in 1976 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The AECS has been working for the elimination of needless blindness since its inception. It has crossed a significant milestone having served people for more than three decades, mainly in cataract related therapies and has become the forefront in the country. Presently, it provides services in a cost effective manner through a chain of hospitals, and various centres. The services are delivered through a three tier health care system such as tertiary, secondary, and primary including the out-patients eye care centres in many urban, rural and remote areas in Tamil Nadu. The Aravind Eye Care System functions in various dynamic ways and have been taking forward the legacy of Dr. GovindappaVenkataswamy, the founder Chairman of Aravind Eye Hospital. The AECS provides education and training to develop ophthalmic human resources; conduct action based research to translate the existing evidence and knowledge into effective action; and work for consultancy and capacity building; advocacy, research and also publish resources  to enhance the eye care system in India. The AECS aims to make high quality ophthalmic products affordable and accessible to the vision impaired worldwide. The recent Annual Activity Report of AECS: 2012-13 shows that the Aravind Eye Hospitals (AEHs) together handled 3.1 million outpatient visits and performed over 371,000 surgeries and laser procedures in the year 2012-2013. They also export their products to more than 130 countries worldwide. The Aravind Eye Care System functions with the help of five primary wings Aravind Eye Hospital, Lions Aravind Institute of Community Ophthalmology (LAICO), Dr. G. Venkataswamy Eye Research Institute, Aravind Eye Bank and Aurolab. The services of the AEHs are not confined to the hospital premises but are extended to reach the community through community outreach programmes. The AEH is recognized as a Centre for Excellence for its unique model of functioning and for its mission to provide high quality, compassionate and affordable eye care to all. The Aravind Eye Care System has reached to a new height in the eye care management system in India by adopting an innovative integrated approach, excellence execution of services, active engagement of a dedicated medical team, and proper utilization of advanced technology.
