    Following up on the success of the CAWa Summer Schools in 2014 and 2015, this year’s Summer School will take place 6-18 June 2015. It will be hosted again by the German-Kazakh University in Almaty. For programme details please refer to the 1st Circular. Applications should be submitted to the organizers by 3 April 2016.


    The Summer School will introduce geoscientific concepts, methods and tools for the analysis and monitoring of water and land resources in Central Asia. These methods are of great value in a framework of integrated water and land resources management.
    The 2-week Summer School will combine theoretical lectures and practical exercises with discussion sessions on the implementation of new methods and tools in managing water and land resources in Central Asia. The programme will include an in-depth introduction to geographical information systems (GIS), an overview on remote sensing applications for land and water resources monitoring, an introduction to hydrometeorological and glaciological measurements and related data processing using R as environment for statistical analysis (, and site visits for practical exercises.

    Language: The courses will be given in English with support by Russian-speaking co-trainers. Hence intermediate knowledge of English is a prerequisite to participation.

    Application and Deadlines

    The Summer School addresses dedicated master and PhD students as well as junior university teachers and researchers with interest in tools for Integrated Water and Land Resources Management and its practical implementation. Eligible are participants from the following Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.
    The CAWa project provides funding for travel and accommodation expenses for the accepted participants. Accommodation will be organized by the host institution DKU.
    Participants will be selected based on their application documents (motivation letter, CV). Interested students and researchers are expected to fill in the Application Form and send it back to the organizers. Please attach a short CV and a motivation letter.
