GIS Day is primarily an educational event that encourages geographic information systems (GIS) users and vendors to build awareness and showcase real-world applications of GIS to schools, businesses and the general public.  It is a global event celebrated during Geography Awareness Week – a geographic literacy initiative sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

This year, Guyana is celebrating GIS Day by showcasing how geographic information systems are useful in “Discovering Where We Live.”  The country is utilizing exhibitions, a GPS Treasure Hunt and other interactive, fun exercises to educate the public on the importance and applications of these systems.
