Aquaculture Certification: Setting the Standards for Farmed Seafood

Aquaculture is the food production sector with the fastest annual growth nowadays, and its production represents more than 50% of global fish production intended for human consumption. Considering the increased demand of high quality seafood products by consumers and distributors within the sector, the development and implementation of standards based on environmental, economic, social and productive pillars throughout the value chain are crucial to maintain and improve the perception of aquaculture production by consumers.
This webinar presented an overview of the main current certification schemes, including key global certification stakeholders in the aquaculture space such as the Aquaculture Stwardship Council (ASC), GLOBALG.A.P., and the Global Seafood Alliance (GSA). The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) showcased examples of national standardization programs in South East Asia, including Vietnam and Thailand. The webinar shedded light on the recently approved FAO Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture, which are an important milestone towards the development of future standardization and certification programs.
