Indonesia Data Hackathon - Cultivhacktion: Closing Ceremony

The Cultivhacktion: Indonesia Digital Agriculture Hackathon concludes with the announcement of the Top 3 solutions and a webinar featuring a panel of distinguished speakers in the digital agriculture space.

Since it’s call for applications in early September, Cultivhacktion: Indonesia Digital Agriculture Hackathon received 30 proposals from innovators all across Indonesia who seeks to help solve the country’s key agricultural sector challenges. The solutions submitted covered a diverse range of digital solutions as well as value chains. After a rigorous preliminary judging round, ten teams were invited to further refine their solutions with guidance from prominent subject matter experts in agriculture, technology and data science and business, before being narrowed down to the final three. 

Top 3 Teams
The Top 3 Solutions of Cultivhacktion were announced at the virtual closing ceremony on November 10, 2021. The top three solutions were selected based on the level of relevance to the problem, innovation, implementation, team collaboration, management team and pitch delivery, as well as impact and sustainability:

•    Teman Pasar. Through its solution, Teman Pasar seeks to help and empower traditional market sellers to reach more consumers digitally, opening access toward capital and finance, and facilitate products supply from sellers in wholesale markets and farmers. 

•    Neurafarm. Dr. Tania by Neurafarm provides an AI-powered crop protection and management platform that can reduce crops failure, increase smallholder farmers profit, and reduce chemical waste. 

•    PemPem. Last but not least, PemPem is a mobile supply chain management software that helps the informal micro-enterprises remediate the challenges of unreliable, unstructured and undocumented operations and finance. Its mobile application structures, optimizes and connects operations, finances and producers in the commodity supply chain, improving the livelihoods of micro-agripreneurs. 

Sharing Session on Digital Agriculture Development Worldwide
The closing ceremony was continued with sharing session on the development in digital agriculture and how it is transforming the sector and bringing impact to the lives of smallholders worldwide, with the speakers: 
•    Michael Kremer, 2019 Nobel Laureate, University Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago
•    Robert Kaplan, Senior Fellow, Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus at Harvard Business School
•    Jeedigunta Satyanarayana, Chairperson, India Digital Ecosystem of Agriculture (IDEA) Working Group
•    Xinyi Lim, Executive Director on Sustainability and Agricultural Impact, Pinduoduo
•    Simon Winter, Executive Director, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture
•    Owen Barder, CEO, Precision Agriculture for Development
•    Simone Strey, CEO, Plantix
•    Ponsi Trivisvavet, CEO, Inari


Cultivhacktion – a digital agriculture hackathon whose name combines the words cultivate, hackathon, and action – seeks to crowdsource technological solutions in order to accelerate the digitization of the agricultural ecosystem in Indonesia. Innovators are invited to develop solutions covering three main areas: 1) improving agricultural productivity and resilience to shocks, including climate shocks; 2) expanding farmers' access to inputs, markets, and finance; and 3) supporting data-driven public sector decision-making. 

Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia and West Java Provincial Government, the hackathon is implemented in collaboration between World Bank Group, TaniHub Group, Microsoft, GIZ, Plug and Play, FAO, IPB University, Data Science Indonesia, GrowAsia, Planet, and MDI Ventures.
