Smart grid technologies (interactive digital functionality) and microgrid structures (locally-sited, semi-independent mini power grids) both have the potential to disrupt the economics of existing generation, transmission and distribution markets. Among other things, smart grids and microgrids facilitate expansion of renewable and distributed energy systems and enhance the efficiency of existing grid resources. This program will address technical and policy considerations relating to smart grid and microgrid environments and will examine prospects for financing future investments. It will cover lessons learned from existing projects, near term opportunities to deploy these technologies together or separately, technological innovations and related concerns (e.g., regarding privacy issues). The panel will discuss different aspects of the relevant markets with a view to assessing competitive advantages/challenges in an investment and financing context.
