To effectively support private sector led off-grid electrification, we need to understand the financial challenges faced by energy supply companies, technology and business solutions providers and project developers. Different financing solutions may be required to develop innovative technologies or business solutions and to ensure faster deployment of mature technologies. Understanding the different types of financial instruments, e.g., grants, cheap loans, guarantees that are needed at the various stages of development of a project or a company is crucial not just to incubate new business models but also to enable scale-up of successful examples.
