This webinar, jointly held by the United Nations Foundation’s Energy Access Practitioner Network and the Clean Energy Solutions Center, aims to introduce attendees to the ongoing work of the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) work on renewable energy standards, and to highlight its recent commitment to the UN Secretary-General’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative. The IEC will be offering three packages of standards pertaining to rural electrification, in particular the newly-adopted global standard IEC 62257-6-5, concerning portable solar photovoltaic lanterns, at a discounted price for qualifying practitioners to facilitate access to sustainable energy standards for stakeholders in developing countries.
The webinar will explore the importance of global quality standards as a means of consumer protection, and ways to reduce the barriers that practitioners traditionally face in having to obtain the standards at a high cost. The webinar will give practitioners and small and medium enterprises a chance to learn about:
IEC’s general procedures as a standards-making body; the new 62257 series of standards and their relevance to energy access, including but not limited to the new solar lantern standard; the nature of the discounts and details of the standards that will be offered in the package; and how qualifying practitioners will be able to access the discounted packages, including a further discount offered by the International Finance Corporation.
Participants will be able to hear directly from IEC the ways in which they are working to enhance the participation of developing countries in IEC standardization work, and receive clarification on eligibility requirements as well as means of access to the standards packages being offered through an interactive Q & A session.
