Microgrids for induction cooking in rural areas July 12, 2013 The Hindu - Business Line, Pg- 06.jpg

In this article published in the Hindu Business Line, July 2013, I argue that microgrids may be deployed for induction cooking in rural un-electrified areas, and this will result in a host of benefits. Further, such an initiative might be timely for inclusion in the election agenda of India's forthcoming elections in 2014.

Ms. Bhave, a very interesting article, with many good points. I am also interested in microgrid-powered efficient cooking, but the stoves I have seen do use a lot of power. Are you aware of any specific models and manufacturers who are making highly efficient, affordable induction cookers? Would love to explore getting some of these for trial in Haiti where we're about to pilot rural microgrids.

    Thanks for posting this article!

    Cheers,

Hello. I am working in Myanmar in the energy access space and here too have been asked by people living in rural areas if electric cookstoves could be an option. 95% of the population in Myanmar relies on traditional sources for cooking and 75% of people don't have access to the grid. An induction stove sounds great, however I wonder how expensive the mini-grid will become if each household starts using 1500W appliances for cooking. This will add a huge demand to the mini-grid, especially as people will be cooking at similar times. What are your thoughts on this?
