New member? Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself to the community

Welcome !

Because off-grid electrification in remote rural areas of the developing world will not happen without the reunion of our segmented efforts, this online collaborative platform intends to bring together in a continued dialogue private sector players, policy makers, financial institutions, development institutions and other interested stakeholders. We hope that, through our interactions  we can create the innovative knowledge and the new connections that will allow such groundbreaking business model to emerge and scale-up.

The technical capabilities offered by the platform range from creating discussions, polls, forums, blogs, collaborative documents, to sharing contact details,  collaboration offers and reports.

We would like your inputs in how you would like to use this tool so we can better design it according to everyone needs. Once having completed your profile, please take a few minutes to introduce yourself and tell us a bit more about what you would like to share and what you will be looking for on this platform by replying to this discussion thread.

Thank you !

    Hi Yann,

How will this discussion place differ from a Linked In discussion? Can the two platforms be linked in some way or form?

Hi Yann - I'm happy to introduce myself: I am Dutch, based in Munich and Founder and CEO of Redavia. Redavia reduces power costs and emissions of remote mining operations in Africa and Australia, as well as remote towns in Africa and Asia Pacific. in remote locations

Redavia has developed a redeployable solar farm which allows customers to lease solar farms instead of purchasing them outright. This removes the main barriers for mines and LDC-based customers to actually start using solar power, because with our product, customers don't need to raise financing to buy the equipment and don't need to sign long-term power purchase agreements. That means this system is very well suited to rural areas in least developed countries.

I am interested in this group because of the potential of Redavia's product for expanding telco tower power systems to local "power hubs". To build these local hubs quickly, Redavia's rental solar farms may be just what is needed to roll out systems rapidly in countries where long-term financing is difficult to obtain.

As for how to use the group: I'd like to do 3 things:

    - Understand who is in the group, what their background is and what they are currently working on.

    - Follow and contribute to the discussion to see whether concrete project oppotunities arise.
    - Expand the group and attract new members to grow the initiative.

    Hope that helps!

    Erwin

    Dear Yann,

Thank you for the invitation to this network. I work for ALPINE-ENERGIE and I am looking after our off´-grid solutions which were especially designed for the telemobile sector for powering BTS.

We are currently investigating options in Nepal and are also looking for possibilities in Uganda as we have a small team there currently working for setting up infrasturcture for mobile operators. The team could also install off-grid systems.

Therefore I am specifically interested in tower companies or mobile operators in Uganda who want to kick off a reference project.

Moreover as the financing is always quite difficult in those projects we are also looking for partners in this regard.

So what I expect from this platform is to talk on concrete projects, develop opportunities and to find partners to move forward.

If you go to youtube and enter "hybrox" you will see one of our´possible solutions.

    All the best Andreas

  • Hi everyone!

I'm Andres, a research asistant in Madrid, Institute of Research in Technology (IIT) - Comillas Pontifical University. I'm working on a Ph.D. thesis for Universal Access considering low-cost technologies, business models, regulation and governance issues.

Though the scope is quite broad, I'm very insterested in the synergies with the telecom sector. It's a great opportunity to learn together.

    Best regards,

    Andres.

  • Hello Everyone!

I am glad to join this energy-telecom initiative!

For many years, Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management with operations in more than 100 countries, has been involved in access-to-energy programmes. Most notably, it has set up the Business, Innovation and People at the Base of the Pyramid (BipBop) programme in 2009 to:

    • Develop a cost-effective portfolio of products and solutions providing access to energy for low income populations and creating markets adapted to local socio-economic contexts in order to meet local needs for equipment.

    • Provide financial, technical, and managerial support to SMEs and entrepreneurs in the field of access to energy through an impact investment fund in order to stimulate the local economy.

    • Create training in energy management trades for disadvantaged youths in order to promote the local long-term skills and expertise development.

You will find more information on the following corporate website: www.schneider-electric.com/bipbop and on our interactive world map of projects: www.bipbop-energy.com or videos on www.tv.schneider-electric.com (under Corporate > Corporate Social Repsonsibility).

In a more pragmatic way, Schneider Electric’s Access to Energy programmes brings together products and solutions, competencies like community energy needs assessment or technical sizing tools, project management, and partners coordination to provide electrification solution for communities in a sustainable way. We developed a dedicated offer which helps us to provide an adapted technical solution for each village’s or community’s context. For instance, a central micro off-grid facility will electrify surroundings community buildings and small industries as well as a battery charging station and a water pumping solution. A local entrepreneur will rent charged batteries to provide energy to solar home systems that are installed in households. This combination helped us to build sustainable business models with our local partners that actually operate the systems. We are sure that models involving ESCOs and local private enterprises will contribute to the dissemination of safe, affordable and sustainable access to energy solutions. A typical example of one of our latest pilot project can be seen on the following video: http://goo.gl/lHf0U.

Therefore, this Energy-Telecom initiative represents a great opportunity for a company like Schneider Electric to further partnerships, marry capabilities and provide a systemic response to the worldwide needs of communities for communicating and developing through access to energy.

  • Hi Yann and everyone,

Thanks for accepting me as a member. I am the regional editor for South Asia. I edit reports and press releases, and learnt a lot while editing a report on IFC's first in the region: the rooftop solar project in Gujarat.

I also authored an article sometime back for Businessworld, an India business magazine, that touched upon the area. For those interested in a rather long article, here is the link: http://www.businessworld.in/en/storypage/-/bw/here-comes-the-sun/905117.37489/page/-1

I hope to learn more from the telcom energy initiatiative on the subject. For the record, I am a very new user, and still finding my way around not just this forum, but Spark  as well !

    Hello Everyone,

Thank you for all the posts. I am here interested in any information related to the possibility of "microgrid in a box" and in new technical solutions for low-rated inverters (around 2kW) when they have to operate with a very fluctuating load profile (where for ex. 70% to the time the load is around 300 W and 30% of the time is 2kW).

I have seen that now IKEA sells solar pannels that you can buy and install yourself following the philospohy of "do it by yourself". How long will it take for this to be widespread? and what are the main barriers? I have seen news saying that solar power is now facing the barrier of the "sun tax" both in Spain and USA. Can anyone comment on that?

    Thanks in advance!
