2013 – Belarus, Rail, Improvements of express passenger service between Vilnius and Minsk

Technical description

The project focus is on electrification of rail track on a section of 77 km from Lithuanian border to Maladzechno in Belarus. This section is on the high-speed rail link between Minsk and Vilnius. There is a joint Action Plan on the facilitation of high speed passenger rail service between Minsk and Vilnius. The joint Action Plan is approved by the heads of the railway administrations of Belarus and Lithuania. This project would facilitate also the movement of freight trains that transit goods from Ukraine and Russia to the ports at the Baltic Sea.

  • Phase I. The first stage of the project was implemented in 2011, which allowed reducing journey time between the two capitals from four to three hours.
  • Phase II. The second stage cut the journey time to two and a half hours as from 1 June 2013.
  • Phase III. It is planned that locomotive terminals supporting the EU radio communication standard GSM-R will be installed in 34 locomotives in H1 2015
Investment amount
The total project budget is 80 mln. EUR. The Phase II project budget is 1,087,942.98 EUR. The EU co-financing amounts to 442 140,03 EUR (40.64%).

Status
Phase III: The equipment will be manufactured by OJSC AGAT-SYSTEM according to the contract made in October 2014.
Expected impacts on transport, environment, social, other
Reducing journey time between the two capitals; improving interoperability and integration of transport systems of both Lithuania and Belarus. Increase the competitiveness of the region.
