2008-17 – Georgia, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars new railway line

Rail project. Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway is a new corridor that will connect Azerbaijan, Georgian and Turkish railways and will open a window onto Europe.

Technical description
The project includes the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the 154 km-long railway line between stations from Marabda to Akhalkalaki section and construction of a new 25 km-long railway from Akhalkalaki to Kartsakhi, the Turkish border.

The total estimated cost of the project is 775 mln USD

Expected time for the implementation of the project is 2008- 2017.

Construction works started in 2008.

Status
Project is underway, as of today 68 % of works have been finished on the Georgian Territory.

Project shall facilitate:
  • Full utilization of Georgia's transit potential;
  • Deepening of regional cooperation;
  • Creation of new jobs

At the first stage cargo turnover is supposed to be 5 mln. tones which in future will increase up to 15 mln. tones and 1 million passenger per year.
