New GSI report + event // At the Crossroads: Balancing the financial and social costs of coal transition in China - by Ziona Eyob in (ESROC) Energy Subsidy Reform Community

A new report was released by IISD’s Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) “At the Crossroads: Balancing the financial and social costs of coal transition in China.” Below is an overview as well as a social media pack.

The report examines the current status of the coal transition in Shanxi, China, and proposes recommendations for how reform can be managed to ensure that economic, social and environmental factors are built into the process. These recommendations draw on international experience, in particular, the experiences of South Wales in the United Kingdom, Appalachian Kentucky in the United States and Asturias in Spain.

The report is being launched today at the event “The Uncertain Transition Away From Coal—Stories from China and the United States ” hosted by the Woodrow Wilson Center, Washington D.C.. Lucy Kitson (@LEKitson) and Hongxia Duan will be speaking. This event is also being webcasted live today from 2pm-4pm EST.
