Dear colleagues:

You are cordially invited to the BBL on “Smart City White Paper - How Can the WBG Help Cities Make the Most of Digital Technologies?”

The White Paper, led by the Smart Cities KSB with support from TTLs across various GPs, focuses on how the World Bank Group can help cities leverage digital technologies and resources. One of the primary objectives of this White Paper is to identify the opportunities and gaps to improve city management, innovation, inclusion, resilience, and service delivery through digital technologies. We would like to seek valuable feedback on the draft White Paper from dedicated discussants and broader Bank staff and address any questions raised by audience.

Professor Nagy K. Hanna, a global expert on digital transformation strategies and former senior advisor at the Bank, will share the findings of the White Paper, which builds on stocktaking of best practices around the world and interviews with TTLs from concerned GPs in addressing the following questions:

  • What and why a smart city?

  • What are the needs for smart city solutions?

  • What is the IBRD/IDA working on? What are IFC and other IFIs working on?

  • What are the challenges and gaps in current development assistance?

  • What are the risks of adopting smart city approach?

  • What are the key success factors for clients?  And,
  • What can the Bank offer?

This is an interactive BBL, through which we hope to stimulate discussion about the findings, the challenges and gaps, and what might be recommended to strengthen the Bank's response to clients’ need to build smart cities.

We look forward to your active participation.
