Dear Smart Cities KSB members and colleagues:

We are pleased to inform you that World Bank’s Smart Cities KSB and Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO are hosting a joint workshop on “The Morgenstadt Model: Driving Sustainability through Innovation”. The half-day event will be held on February 15, 2018.

Fraunhofer IAO has established the Morgenstadt Innovation Network with some 80 members that has over the past couple of years become a well-known platform for bringing together public sector, private sector, research and civic organizations in an endeavor to push for better urban development. They’ve developed an action-oriented model, called the Morgenstadt City Lab, for accelerating and strengthening the sustainable development of cities. The model is based on six deep-dive analyses and hundreds of case studies to enable other cities to improve their sustainability credentials. Based on an integrated indicator framework and the assessment of over 100 action fields, Morgenstadt experts derive individual city profiles that serve to design and implement individual strategies for city transformation.
The workshop will offer:
    • An overview of European smart city initiatives from high-level city representatives
    • In-depth methodology and case reviews for the Morgenstadt model
    • A simulation of Morgenstadt model with a World Bank client city
The objectives are:
    • Identifying cities' needs and their challenges in implementing Smart urban infrastructure under the facilitation of Fraunhofer experts
    • Showcasing success stories of selected Smart City projects that Fraunhofer has completed and sharing efforts undertaken to address critical challenges and issues during project design and implementation
    • Exchange of expertise and inspiration with Fraunhofer experts and invited high-level city officials in various fields, particularly in mobility, energy, citizen engagement, strategic planning and capacity development
    • Having an interactive ½ day session where future collaboration areas with Fraunhofer and the World Bank would be outlined and further define
