The authors use a gender and food systems framework and standardized measures of women’s empowerment to analyze evidence of “what works” to empower women in agriculture, drawing on findings from 11 impact evaluations of agricultural development projects with empowerment objectives. Associations between empowering women and societal benefits from agri-food systems outcomes (such as, increased agricultural productivity and income, and improved nutrition and food security) are also examined, followed by recommendations for measurement and policy.
