Women’s Representation in Leadership and Decision-making Positions

Created Sep 25 2023, 4:50 AM by Gatha Rijal

Women’s representation in leadership and director positions can be further studied under two categories:

a. Gender Representation in Leadership Positions

This directly influences attitudes toward family-friendly policies and gender equality, including considerations such as guidance on work-life balance, addressing the motherhood pay gap, providing lactation facilities, offering maternity and paternity benefit packages, family leave options, and ensuring workplace safety.

b. Recognition of Employee Diversity

Within organizations, there exist two distinct categories of employees, encompassing both men and women, particularly women with children. These categories, as identified by Schwartz, are "career-primary" and "career-and-family." Schwartz emphasizes that these two groups hold different values for the organization and are mutually beneficial. Consequently, employers should acknowledge and appreciate the merits of both categories. Furthermore, Schwartz asserts that every employee has the right to choose between prioritizing their career, their family, or a combination of both. By recognizing these dynamics and valuing their complementarity, employers can retain valuable resources, including potential future women executives (F. N. Schwartz, 1989).
