Exploring the Linkages Between Women’s Paid and Unpaid Work and Their Experiences of Intimate Partner and Non-Partner Violence in Nepal (2020)

Two key channels through which women’s economic empowerment affects gender-based violence include the economic bargaining model (which suggests that women’s paid work reduces violence by increasing their bargaining power) and male backlash model (which suggests that it increases violence as traditional roles are challenged). This study of 937 women from cooperative societies in Nepal suggests that the latter channel dominates and women’s employment may increase exposure to violence. Read more.
