Coupling Labor Supply Decisions: An Experiment in India (2021)

Using a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) to understand better the low female labor force participation rate in India, researchers came to a surprising finding: intra-household discussions between young couples about a wife taking a weaving job at a carpet manufacturer decreased enrollment in the opportunity by as much as 50%. This paper provides new evidence about the unintended effects of joint decision-making in contexts that give both spouses veto powers – with differing viewpoints negatively affecting employment decisions and the labor supply.
