Context

Over the past decades, Amazonian countries have established more than 1,000 protected areas (PAs), now covering approximately 30% of the region. However, despite this significant effort, questions remain about the effectiveness of these areas in preserving the forest and mitigating climate change, partly due to inconsistencies in evaluation methodologies and data used across studies.

To address these uncertainties, the paper by Rafael Araujo, Arthur Bragança, Francisco Costa, Marcelo Sant´Anna, Eduardo Adame, Frank Gentile, “Quantifying the Carbon Preserved by Protected Areas in the Amazon” shares the results of the use of high-resolution remote sensing data and land-use models to assess the contribution of PAs in reducing deforestation and carbon emissions. The findings shows that these areas have prevented the loss of 375,000 km² of forest and the release of 12.8 billion tons of CO₂ equivalent, with 75% of these benefits coming from preventing forest conversion into pastureland. However, the impact of PAs varies significantly depending on economic factors such as transportation costs and land suitability for cattle ranching.

This webinar, organized by the World Bank through its Amazon Sustainable Landscape program (ASL), aims to share and discuss the study’s findings, analyzing the effectiveness of PAs and identifying those with the greatest impact, providing key insights for decision-making on Amazon conservation strategies across the region.
