Context
Over the past 25 years, droughts in the Amazon have become more frequent, mainly due to climate change and human activity. This concerning trend weakens the ecosystem’s ability to provide vital services for communities along the riverbanks. The interplay of droughts, warmer temperatures, and deforestation is severely impacting biodiversity and the livelihoods of local communities.
The webinar “Overcoming Droughts and Securing the Amazon’s Future = Our Future” is the third session in the Let's Talk Drought in LAC! series, organized by the World Bank through the GEF-financed Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program and the Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership GWSP-financed Latin America and Caribbean Drought Initiative. This session will explore current adaptation strategies to address recent droughts in the Amazon and strengthen preparedness for the future, highlighting community-based coping mechanisms and showcase innovative, resilience-building approaches from across the region.
This webinar will allow to hear about cutting-edge research on current and future challenges of droughts in the Amazon from Jhan Carlo Espinoza, Director of Research at the IRD-France, listen to firsthand insights from Tabea Casique Coronado, from the Secretary of the Board of Directors of Interethnic Association for the Development of the Peruvian Rainforest (AIDESEP) in Peru; and learn about lessons from the Colombian Amazon on drought adaptation from Rodrigo Botero, Director of the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS).
