How to enhance sustainability in the aquaculture sector has been in the agenda of the World Bank and FAO for the past years. Key actions and projects focused on the design and implementation of best management practices, focused on 4 major pillars – social, environmental, economic, and technical aspects were presented during this session. The session started with an overview of the FAO Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture and what they mean to Africa, followed by the presentation of the World Bank Guidelines for Sustainable Aquabusiness Development and Financing. Regional initiatives focused on capacity building, institutional strengthening and governance were presented by the African Aquaculture Network (ANAF) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
