What is a Community Description?

The Community Description is the first presentation of your Community to a visitor. It's a short text that describes what your Community is about, who it is for, and how it provides value.

Why should you develop a Community Description?

The goal of the Community Description is to convert visitors into members by attracting your target audience to join. You will use the Community Description in the Community’s online platform and communications materials.

How do you craft an effective Community Description?

To craft an effective Community Description, use the guidelines below. For extra support, follow the instructions in our Community Description template.

  • Keep it short: try to use around 50 words.
  • Cover three core points and two optional ones.
  • Start by welcoming the visitor, then clearly state who the Community is for, and show that you understand your prospective members’ needs, challenges, or aspirations.
  • Be specific about the concrete benefits your Community would offer.
  • Optionally, you can conclude by mentioning the larger vision for your Community’s impact if it makes sense for your audience.
